The Cáca Milis 2017 Christmas Cabaret

00-HMulkerns-FCleary-by-KWeaverWWe celebrated our final quarterly event of 2018 at the Wexford Arts Centre  with a wonderful Christmas Cabaret, our 9th annual Christmas Cabaret, believe it or not! And if you don’t – here’s a pic of our first “preview” show, taken by Kevin Weaver in December 2008 with Helena Mulkerns and Wexford Pianoman Fintan Cleary.

Meanwhile, back at the Arts Centre, Hostess Helena Mulkerns, performed for 2017 with the inimitable Josh Johnston on piano, singing Christmas-festive and Cabaret-sultry songs. Guests, as always – brought a tapestry of the arts to the stage,  weaving through brand new music, dance, a Christmas film, fiction, a superb tribute to the great David Bowie and even a puppet show.  Magical as Christmas itself, the marionettes performed the classic tale of “The Little Match Girl”.  The Life on Strings Puppet Theatre, direct from Germany, are setting up events and workshops in Wexford for 2018 so watch out for them.

ANDREWSlinky shape-throwing and filigree-limb-winding steps got the audience in fine form next, as the powerful duo of Ellina Shmarkovskaya and Andrew Kenny of Tango Wexford and Hurricane Tango delivered classic and contemporary tango.

With no less than four Wexford writers shortlisted for this year’s Bórd Gais Energy Book Awards, we lost our scheduled author, best-selling novelist Carmel Harrington, to ‘flu, but we hope to see her back for the next event, and meantime, she gave us the idea to donate 50% of our raffle ticket sales this year to The Wexford Women’s Refuge – a worthy suggestion indeed (see the photo gallery for more).

The honey-toned Dark Honey played us out to the intermission, performing  from Dark Honey their eponymous new album. Songs are mostly the work of one of Cáca Milis’s favourite songsters,  Lorraine McColgan, whose sultry voice and fascinating tales evoke echoes of Cave, Cohen and Mark Lanegan, with a compelling sound that haunts and pleases.

EGGS-SOLDIERS-posterThe Ciné Sweetcake presentation was a multi-award-winning film made by New-York based Irish film maker Imelda O’Reilly: “Eggs and Soldiers”.  A moving, vibrant Christmas story with a difference, the film looked at an emigrant Christmas and the bittersweet trials of a struggling family.  It was a huge hit with the audience, who commented afterwards on its heart and humour.

Top of the night there was a special treat as Secret Life performed a loving and lively tribute to the late great David Bowie.  With their much-anticipated performance coming up in January at the Dublin Bowie Festival, Michael Way and his dedicated crew (including longtime Cáca Milis Sweetheart Martina Keane on vocals) will gave a sneak peek at their take on one of rock’s finest legends.

We’d like to thank the generous sponsors of our Christmas Raffle 2017, which raised €100 for  the Wexford Women’s RefugeSam MacCauley’s of Redmond Square; Clayton White’s Hotel; Wexford’s newest bistro; the BOA Urban Eatery,; textile Artist Jorika Kohl of Love and a Needle; Tara Press and Josh Johnston.  Thanks to all the artistes who joined us onstage, to the team at Wexford Arts Centre for staying late as the Cabaret’s festivities went over time, photographer Alan Mahon – and a very Happy Christmas to all the audience members – without you we’re nothing!!  Last but at the heart of it all, we’d like to thank the fabulous Elizabeth Whyte, Director of WAC.
